Paul Merson Calls For Arsenal To Sign James Ward Prowse From Southampton

Paul Merson has encouraged Arsenal to “pull out all of the stops” to sign James Ward Prowse from Southampton in the summer..

The Gunners are thought to be looking for a number of fresh signings ahead of the 2022-23 season, in spite of having completed deals to sign Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira.

Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad with some new talent ahead of the current campaign as the Spaniard attempts to lead the Gunners to a top four finish next term.

Midfielder Ward-Prowse was excellent for Southampton last season when he scored ten goals and five assists in thirty six Premier League matches to help the Saints finish 15th in the table.

The 27-year-old is connected with a move to West Ham United in the summer – however Merson has alerted the Gunners they can’t enable the midfielder to go towards the Hammers, stating that Arsenal must be going all out to try to take him with the Emirates.

Merson said in an interview with the Daily Star: “Arsenal cannot allow West Ham to purchase James Ward-Prowse,” he said. I think he’s a good signing for whoever’s got him.

“I think he’s among the great players of the ball in England. Trent Alexander Arnold and Him and Trent Alexander – Arnold notice things few other English players do, and are able to spray it all around the pitch because they’ve such a great range of passes.

“I do not understand the reason why Arsenal aren’t pulling all of the stops to try to get James Ward-Prowse from Southampton,” he said.

“Arsenal have to purchase expertise and so they will be purchasing a seasoned England international that knows the Premier League and might make a great impact to them..

They’re looking for a professional who could bounce the ball around from the center of the pitch. They’ve lots of players who can play one-touch, tipy – tappy stuff, but nobody can switch the play over the top or even enjoy a killer ball over the top.

Ward-Prowse is a member of the Southampton youth organization. he made his first team debut for the South coast club in 2011 at only 16 years old.

Since then, he’s scored a total of forty four goals in 364 matches for the Saints and has been a frequent member of the 1st team for the past ten seasons.

Since his senior international debut in 2017, Ward-Prowse has scored 2 goals in 11 matches for England..
