Manchester United are in search of a new centre half this summer..
The Manchester Evening News reports United held preliminary talks with the representatives of Antonio Rudiger, out of agreement in Chelsea at the summer, but there’s minimal hope of the Germany international joining them.
Sources close to the player tend to be more focused on discussing possible contracts with clubs guaranteed for the next season in the Champions League. Even though United are three points behind Tottenham in fourth place, their next three games are at Liverpool and Arsenal and also Chelsea at home.
In the summer, United signed Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, and although the 28-year-old has excelled in most of his performances, Varane has missed 15 games due to illness or injury.
Varane has been United’s first choice target, with Villarreal’s centre half Pau Torres last year their back-up option. Torres made it possible for Villarreal to reach the Champions League quarter finals and is likely to begin at the World Cup for Spain.
Reports from his home country Germany state the 29-year-old centre defender displayed a readiness to sign a new agreement with the Blues, with his current deal set to expire at the conclusion of the season. Bild reports that Rudiger had agreed personal terms over a new deal to stay at Stamford Bridge after the 2021/22 campaign..
