So far, Manchester United have refused to let Erik ten Hag choose his preferred backroom staff..
The Dutchman has decided to depart Ajax this summer and head for the dugout at Old Trafford, with talks now ongoing over the make up of his backroom staff.
Ten Hag is, as reported by The times, keen on a reunion with Steve McClaren, with whom he previously worked at FC Twente. The former England manager knows United very well after having worked as an assistant between 1999 and 2001 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
United, however, have opted not to pursue a move for McClaren despite Ten Hag’s desire to get him in.
Instead, the Dutchman was compelled to look elsewhere in search for an assistant. He was recently beaten back by former Twente coach Fred Rutten, who snubbed Ten Hag in favour of signing up for Ruud van Nistelrooy at PSV.
In life, everybody makes his own choice. I want to see my family, grandchildren. “I felt uncomfortable with this project,” Rutten told ESPN.
In Manchester United, you can not get off the train. When you step into something I want you to feel comfortable. That’s the case with PSV. ”
Ten Hag is expected to bring his current assistant Mitchell van der Gaag to Ajax, but the club would like familiar faces around him and is keen for United to assist him in that capacity.
